Mark Phillips at Bluefrog has done us a service with this update on mobile giving, with a UK slant.

He links to a presentation from JustGiving.com indicating that 20% of UK charities are using mobile fundraising in some fashion. JustGiving itself receives almost 24,000 visits a day from mobile devices, up 82% in 2011 alone (as of April).

Says Mark: “The UK’s Haiti moment occured with Comic Relief 2011, when over £15 million was raised through 4.3 million text donations.”

Mark also provides a link to this excellent report and toolkit from nfpSynergy on charities’ mobile use. It includes sections on the overall importance mobile phones have achieved in daily life; public attitudes about mobile giving and how charities are presently using mobiles in their work; the potential nfpSynergy sees for the channel; and barriers to greater use by charities. Plus eight case studies. Virtually all of this from a UK perspective.

This study found that 15% of UK mobile phone texters have made donations via texting. And 31% recall being asked to give via text … almost three times more than a year earlier.

Lots to think about here. Thanks for the pointer Mark.

Tom
