I, too, would love to see more mergers. You have hit the nail on the head for two of my pet peeves – redundant overhead and performance measurement. Although I am not in favor of growth for growth’s sake. I want to see quantifiable numbers; how is the problem being addressed and how many people are being served? We need to get the public away from the impression that a positive financial report equates to good management and good programs.

I saw this post referenced on the Chronicle's Blog. I have thought about this same question a lot. I think that charities should have to be better and more efficient but I don't think fundraising is the indicator. If you increase or decrease your resources doesn't say anything about how good your charity is at doing it's job. All it says is you have a good or bad fundraising staff. What about the organization that needs to raise one million dollars to do what they do and that is all it takes to succeed in their mission?

[...] Too Much Charity? | The Agitator Tom Belford thinks nonprofits should. I agree completely. It is awful to have your concept fail. It is worse for it to limp along sucking up limited resources and destroying value. This entry was written by Sean Stannard-Stockton.
